Queen’s University is one of Canada’s oldest degree-granting post-secondary institutions, serving just over 30,000 students and staff. Upon completing a local food benchmark, Joli Manson (Sodexo and General Manager of Hospitality Services) was surprised by their current level of success. “My expectation had been in the 30% range, NOT the 63% which is our benchmark”. Despite already procuring a large portion of food from Ontario sources, Joli still hopes to increase Queen’s University’s local and sustainable purchasing, but with special focus on protein. “We want to increase our Ontario protein by 10%, [but] we need to have the ability to access provincially inspected protein for this to happen.” Procurement of Ontario protein lags significantly behind other categories due to a requirement for all proteins to be processed at a federal inspected, rather than provincially inspected, facility.
